homemade signal booster?i was trying to figure out how to boast my signal coverage in my area, and a got an idea:
to use a UHF amplifier, to pick up the towers signal and rebroadcast it. of coarse since things like WiFi, Bluetooth, and cellular 2G/3G/4G networks use two way radio, the signal can go back to the reviving end of the UHF amp, and get broadcasting to hit whatever tower. my phone should better recognize the tower, as if i just magically made a tower 2 feet away. however this might also amplify stay noise.
if this idea doesn't work, why not? i think i am going to need at least a 20dB increase in power, but as of now i need to do more research.
but if i can buy a product that does a similar thing for less than $40, i would.

i tried to place a wire to the 1/2 inch long antenna, only to find out whatever i did i decreased my signal strength. (from 98dbm to 110dbm, from 1-2-ish bat to nothing..) i was able to get better WiFi signal however, with a 1.5 inch steel wire. :)
besides, it would be weird to carry a phone with a antenna sticking out the top of it,(especially on a galaxy s3) that is SO 90'sReply

This is because it could cause harmful cellular signals near your ear or could cause some type of damage to your phone and could even possibly void your cell phone warranty. We do not know whether these negative consequences are possible or not but they certainly come to mind when modifying any electronic device.
Besides getting a homemade cell phone amplifier you can always just get some sort of branded product. Options for this include either small external antennas that hook directly into compatible phones or a wireless antenna system that you setup in your home to sort of create their own small expanded cellular network.
If you are looking for a cell phone amplifier, repeater, booster, or antenna booster we highly recommend that you go with a commercial product because it will be safer and should work better. If however you don't want or have the money you can always try a homemade version. The only catch is that it might not work all the well or it might cause damage to your cell phone.

From Germany comes a very curious but at the same time debatable. The German Government had raised the alarm about possible harmful effects that wireless hot spots could cause to people's health.
The Environment Minister even ruled that using the Wi-Fi there are serious health risks and that this technology would be to use as little as possible.
Very serious statement especially in the absence of evidence to the extent that the German Government officially would tend to maintain a soft line with the concept of prevention "since I don't know for sure if it hurts or not, let's use it as little as possible".
The British long ago had criticised the Wi-Fi from the health point of view but their line was definitely softer, so much so that they themselves deem the German initiative as "the worst condemnation that you could ever give."
The Germans still warn of serious danger of ElectroSmog judging alarming exponential growth of equipment emitting electromagnetic fields, be they televisions, be they cellphones.
Even arrive to advise you to use a phone booth rather than the cell phone, or a wired connection rather than a wireless connection.
Up to here the harsh judgment of the German Government that in my view exaggerated slightly in shades and especially in comparing how dangerous a television antenna booster for cell phones.
The precautionary approach is sacrosanct, but it would be more fair to pick on those who really caused the real electromagnetic pollution (mega radio, Tv repeaters repeaters, antennas outlawed ...) rather than with producing ridiculous fields.
Home access point has a reach of ridicule and even at 50 cm from the point of origin of pollution produced is hardly measurable.

Dear editors, I inform you that at Misilmeri, according to reliable sources, is about to be a new mobile antenna, even they say that you have done already the concrete base.
The area where it will be installed in the coast of mulberry, a little before the housing market side, right near the town, Prince Coast District.
I would like to ask the Municipality of Misilmeri if granted all permissions, for these gentlemen to install yet another antenna, which will only increase the number of cancer deaths to Misilmeri.
Remember that should be placed in 500 metres from the town centre.
But it is possible that no one ever watches on anything?
It lacked only the umpteenth mobile antenna, now we are complete.
Anyone interested to monitor the electromagnetic pollution that has undergone this maledettissimo country?
Instead of monitoring radiation levels emitted from the existing repeaters and to protect the health of citizens, what do you do?
You let others come to install other repeaters, so who cares, the dead are no longer news.
I inform you that was done in these hours collecting signatures to try to block another abomination at the expense of our health.
Personally, I am one of the petitioners.
I hope that all citizens with a bit of common sense do likewise, but i hope the existing repeaters in the town are removed with an order of Mr. Mayor.

Most cell phone antenna boosters look like paper-thin pieces of plastic with the configuration stamped or printed onto them. They are designed to be attached to the cell phone near the battery. The principle is that the circuitry imprinted on the booster is enhanced by the charge of the battery, which, in turn, helps the phone receive a better signal.

Analog phones are nearly as extinct as dinosaurs; however, some people have hung onto them. Some tests with antenna boosters on analog phones reported increased signal strength. In addition, some analog users reported decreased static, which can be a problem with older cell phones.

Results for tests of antenna boosters on digital phones was mixed. One set of tests reported modest but definite improvement in signal strength. Other tests reported no improvement at all. Still other testers reported that antenna boosters actually degraded the quality of the performance of digital cell phones.
Accept No Substitutes?

For the tests which reported increased signal strength with cell phone antenna boosters, the tester concluded that a particular brand, the Cell Phone Antenna Booster, was effective in increasing signal strength. On the other hand, the tester declared so-called knockoffs, which were were less expensive, to be no more than scams.
Considerations

Cell phones work by transmitting and receiving radio signals. This means that cell phones work best when there is little or no interference, such as concrete walls. A cell phone booster can only enhance a signal. Cell phone antenna boosters or even actual cell phone antennas often have little effect where radio signals are prevented from reaching the cell phone.

FaceTime under 3 g network: here's how Italian managers behave
6 iOS was released last night from Apple and among the many new features we find finally a chance to chat with FaceTime 3 g network too. FaceTime, for those few who still do not know, is a system of dedicated Apple users video calls. All those who are in possession of an iPhone or an iPad or Mac, are able to VideoCall with each other for free. A functional service and very well done that until now was available only under WiFi network.
But as mentioned, with the arrival of iOS 6, FaceTime on iPhone and iPad is now also available in the 3 g network. The possibility of mobile video was an option much awaited by Apple users, but had already wondered if FaceTime service under non-mobile network could result in extra costs relating to the generated data traffic.
Unfortunately, we are aware that many mobile operators shall prohibit the use of VoIP applications on your mobile phone, or let them pay for their use of expensive extras. In America for example AT&T has already announced that those who want to use FaceTime under its mobile network will have to pay extra.
With regard to Italy instead, mobile operators have spoken on this subject just yesterday, driven by the insistent demands of their customers.
3 Italy stated that FaceTime could be safely used under its mobile network at no additional charge. A word that is not surprising given that the handler has never placed any constraint type for using VoIP programs.
Along the same lines of 3 Italy also Wind, that despite not being an official partner of Apple in our country, did know that FaceTime will be easily usable free of charge for all customers who want to make video calls on the move.
Speech a bit different as far as TIM and Vodafone.
TIM, is done only to know that FaceTime will be usable on its own mobile network, but also stated that not all his plans permit data for free. However the operator did not specify what data plans include free use of FaceTime and which are not. Probably we'll find out in the next few days or after the launch of the new Apple iPhone 5.
As for Vodafone, the Manager said that FaceTime under its mobile network you may use freely only if you have subscribed to one of 100 + Smart, Smart 200 + or one of Smart + subscriptions. Would rather cut off all other subscriptions that actually already today in terms of use prohibit the use of VoIP applications.

You make a dipol antenna at 1/2 or 1/4 wavelength out of foil -- better would be copper tho. Of course you'd have to know which GSM frequency your phone is using at the time, and need different size antennae for each frequency.
You could also build a wide-range helical antenna (which I believe is actually built into the phone), out of a q-tip and a single strand of stranded wire.
For the ultimate in range, you could probably put together a yagi-style directional antenna which would allow you to reach a tower 10-15 miles away in direct line of sight, and all for a half an afternoon of work and $15 in hardware. I've put together a "cantenna" (search the web) for my wireless network and have a fast connection to a neighbor's a 3 miles away. I also built a "pentenna" (own design) which is pretty much a 1/4 wavelength microwave dipole inside a BIC pen housing. Boosted signal strength from attic to basement from 10% to 95%.
I think antenna boosters are worthless. I haven't tested them, but they look like a passive RF repeater with a panel-antenna. Of course they boost the received signal by providing a larger resonance element, but at the same time they would weaken the outgoing RF signal because the transmitter now has to excite a larger chunk of metal. Aside from that, a passive repeater loses about 50% of the transmitted RF power by design. And I haven't even said anything about directionality yet...
Phone manufacturers have some pretty smart RF engineers on staff. You can rest assured that for 99% of your use, the built-in antenna is optimal, and for the remaining 1% a $7 "signal booster" won't help you either.

Passive antennas work but require experimentation.
Even cellphones with no external antenna connection can be
"connected" by placing the proper antenna near the phone itself.

Of course if you have ZERO bars on your phone inside a building
even if you could double your signal strength it might not be enough
and some time of amplifier may be required.
Experimentation, along with a little coax and time will pay off.
Remember that some cellphones can take up to 10 seconds to
update their signal strength meters so make changes S L O W L Y.
