View Large on Black. This is our closest neighbor, a cell phone antenna mast for the European UMTS (3G) system. It is located about 200 meters from our house. Many people instinctively feel afraid of radiation when they are close to a mast, but contrary to common belief, you should be close to the base station if you want to lower the radiation exposure. Radiation from an antenna decreases quadratically with distance. This means that the radiation from the mast is neglectabe. The main source of radiation is your own cell phone, and to preserve battery life, the phone uses as little power as possible. If you are far away from the base station, the phone must use it's full power (typically 1-2 W), but if you are close the the mast the phone lowers the power pumped into your brain by up to 1000 times. So there you have it, if you fear radiation, only use your phone when it indicates maximum signal quality, and demand a base station close to your home, work or school.
